Frequently
Asked
Questions

Please click/tap one of the FAQs below to find out more.

1. What is HyFlex?

HyFlex is an approach to teaching that melds the traditional classroom with the virtual classroom. The word HyFlex is a concatenation of Hybrid-Flexible, which is a format where students are able to choose how they participate in class on a session-by-session basis. Participation can be in face-to-face in the classroom or by live stream online. Edutech Wiki defines HyFlex this way:

"HyFlex is a course design model that presents the components of hybrid learning in a flexible course structure that gives students the option of attending sessions in the classroom, participating online or doing both. Students can change their mode of attendance weekly or by topic, according to need or preference. Courses built on the HyFlex model help to break down the boundary between the virtual classroom and the physical one. By allowing students access to both platforms, the design encourages discussion threads to move from one platform to the other."

2. How does HyFlex differ from CBS' traditional and FFV (Face-to-Face Virtual) courses?

HyFlex combings the best of our existing course modalities to create a format that allows students to pursue their education with the format that works best for the student. In a HyFlex course, the course is taught on a CBS campus like in the traditional format. The course is also live-streamed so that students who are not on campus can participate in real-time.  Recorded class sessions are also available for students to review as a study aid.

3. Which courses are being taught in a HyFlex format?

We expect the number of HyFlex courses to increase in the coming semesters. In the course schedule found in the MyCBS student portal, look for courses with a section that begins with the letters "HYF" such as "HYF1A", "HYF2A", "HYF3A", etc.

CBS will begin offering HyFlex courses in the Fall 2022 semester.

4. What can I expect in a HyFlex course?

Coming soon!

5. What are the technical requirements for a HyFlex course?

To participate in a HyFlex course you will need either an up-to-date Windows or Mac computer, high-speed Internet access, a supported browser, and a suitable study environment. CBS defines a suitable study environment as a place where students are not distracted by their surroundings and can speak freely when participating in class. Location with background noise or excessive traffic are not suitable study environments.

You will also need to install Class. Class is software that extends the Zoom video conferencing software to enhance and extend Zoom into a better platform for a virtual classroom. There is no charge to you for the Class software. It is included in your course tuition. For instructions on how to install Class please click HERE.
